“Petrescu will arrive in South Korea on Wednesday and begin negotiations with Jeonbuk to sign a coaching contract,” Romania’s Azerpress reported on Aug. 8.
‘Azerpress’ is a news agency run by the Romanian government. Jeonbuk reportedly chose Petrescu to fill the vacancy at the helm following the resignation of Kim Sang-sik (47) on May 4.
Petrescu is a former star of the English Premier League’s (EPL) 10th anniversary Best 11 Foreign Players. As a coach, he led his teams to the Romanian First Division, Russian Second Division, Romanian Super Cup and Chinese Football Association Cup titles.
The 2023 K League 1 will be without a match on Dec. 12-23 due to the scheduling of A matches under the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) International Match Calendar. That’s plenty of time for Petrescu to finalize his appointment as Jeonbuk’s head coach.
Romania is ranked 26th in the UEFA rankings. Petrescu has been named Coach of the Year by Romania’s largest sports newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor five times, including last season.
